Local Conditions
Common roofing challenges in Matthews, NC
The most common roofing problems in Matthews are second-layer roofs, moss on shaded north slopes, hail and wind, worn pipe boots and sagging gutters. They follow the age of the subdivision and the trees standing over it.
Questions about your roof? Call (704) 352-1112 or get a free estimate.
- Second-layer roofs and hidden decking Plenty of Matthews roofs had a second layer laid over the first to save money, and the sheathing under there has not been seen in decades. We tear off to the deck, walk it, replace anything soft, and photograph the decking before underlayment goes on.
- Moss and algae on shaded north slopes Big trees on the older Matthews lots keep the north slope damp, and from what we see, the moss and black streaking that follow lift the shingle edges over time. We do not pressure-wash a roof; we clean it gently on maintenance visits. On a replacement we go through the Owens Corning Duration options with you before anything is ordered.
- Hail and wind off the US 74 corridor Thunderstorms track across Matthews the same way they cross Charlotte, and the simpler roofs on the newer builds near I-485 take hail on wide slopes. We chalk and count hits per square. We also photograph the dents in the gutters and vents, since they show the strike pattern, and all of it goes into the photo report we give you.
- Pipe boots and vent flashing past their life On a Matthews roof well into its life, the rubber pipe boots have split, the ridge vent has faded and the flashing at the furnace flue has rusted. These are the leaks that show up as a small ceiling stain near a bathroom. We photograph them on the free inspection and replace the boots and vent flashing on a repair visit and on every replacement.
- Gutters pulling off long fascia runs Older gutter runs sag between hangers, the spikes back out of the fascia, and water drops behind the gutter and rots the fascia board. We replace gutters in Matthews with new runs on hidden hangers screwed into the rafter tails, fascia checked first.
The free photo inspection on a Matthews roof sorts out which of these you have, and our owner walks you through the pictures.

Matthew is the most professional owner I have encountered in a very long time. As a former owner of a business it was such a great experience working with Matthew. He is detail oriented, knowledgeable of all things roofing, product knowledge. He is a pleasure to work with. Completed the inspection, provided pictures and explanation, patched the roof and came and met with the insurance adjuster.…
Just had my roof and gutters done with Charlotte Premier Roofing. From start to finish the experience was beyond expectation. Matthew communicated with me along the way and when I had to put the project on hold he didn’t try to pressure me to do it sooner. I’ve dealt with some companies that are so pushy and untrustworthy; this is not one of them.…
Matthew and his team at Charlotte Premier Roofing did an exceptional job replacing my roof. The entire process was smooth, efficient, and completed on schedule. The workmanship is excellent, and the price was very reasonable. I truly appreciated their professionalism, clear communication, and attention to detail throughout the project.…

About the Area
All about Matthews, NC
Matthews is a town in southeast Mecklenburg County and a suburb of Charlotte, about 10 miles from Uptown in a straight line, not a drive time.
Charlotte borders it to the northwest and southwest, and Mint Hill to the northeast. Stallings is to the southeast, across the Union County line. The town is fully built out, so our work here is replacement and repair on existing houses.
The old center
The town started as a stagecoach stop and a sawmill settlement. People unofficially called it Stumptown, for the tree stumps left after clearing land for cotton fields. When the railroad came through, it was renamed for a railroad director.

The old center near the tracks still has the older houses with steep roofs and chimneys. Those are the roofs most likely to be carrying two layers.
Ridges, creeks and trees
The center of Matthews sits on a ridge that drains north to McAlpine Creek and south to Fourmile Creek. The older subdivisions on either side of it have real grade and mature trees. So the roofs get shade, leaf load and the odd limb most of the year.
That is one reason we go into the attic on every inspection. A small limb puncture shows up from underneath long before it shows in the ceiling.

More about roofing in Matthews
US 74, Independence Boulevard, is the main highway through town. It runs northwest into Charlotte and southeast toward Monroe. NC 51 crosses the north side toward Mint Hill and west to Pineville.
I-485 runs through the southern part of Matthews with four interchanges, and that is how we get here from Weddington.
The newer subdivisions along the loop are younger than the ones near the center and have simpler roofs. They went up together, so their roofs tend to come due at about the same time.
Around town
Matthews is home to the headquarters of Harris Teeter and Family Dollar, the Matthews Alive parade on Labor Day weekend, and the Sportsplex. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools serve the town, with Butler High and Crestdale Middle inside the limits.
Long-time homeowners
A large share of residents are long-time homeowners, many of them retired. The roof is usually the biggest single repair the house has needed. So the inspection on a Matthews roof gets the time it needs, with photos of everything and an honest read.
One reviewer wrote that when they had to put their project on hold, our owner did not try to pressure them into doing it sooner.
FAQs
Frequently asked questions: roofing in Matthews, NC
How does a hail or wind insurance claim work in Matthews?
We inspect the Matthews roof, the gutters, the vents and the attic, chalk and photograph every hit, and build a photo report. You contact your insurer, and we can meet the adjuster on your Matthews roof and walk through what we found.
One reviewer wrote that our owner inspected their roof after a hail storm, their insurance agreed, and our crew removed and replaced the roof and gutters. We do not promise the outcome, since the carrier makes that call.
Can you replace the gutters at the same time as the roof in Matthews?
Yes. On an older Matthews house it is usually the right call, because the fascia gets checked and the new drip edge and gutter go on together.
Customers have had roof and gutters replaced on the same job, and one reviewer wrote that our crew replaced all of the gutters along with the shingles. Ask at the inspection and it goes on the same estimate.
What do you look for on an older Matthews roof?
The center of Matthews sits on a ridge that drains north to McAlpine Creek and south to Fourmile Creek, and the older neighborhoods on both sides have real slope and a lot of mature trees over the roof. Shade keeps moss and algae going on the north-facing slopes and leaf load in the valleys, and after an ice storm a limb on a Matthews roof is the thing we photograph most.
How does Charlotte Premier Roofing get from Weddington to Matthews?
It's a straight run: Providence Road (NC 16) out of Weddington to the Governor James G. Martin Freeway (I-485), then Independence Boulevard (US 74) or Matthews-Mint Hill Road (NC 51) to work the town itself.
Matthews is fully built out and bordered by Charlotte, Mint Hill and Stallings, so most of what we do there is replacement and repair on existing houses rather than new construction, and a lot of those roofs are old enough to be on their second shingle.
